top10: South Korea

Time for another top10 post, showcasing the best photos I’ve managed to take on my travels.

A quick recap of the rules:

  • Ten photos per country.
  • They must be taken by me.
  • No fakery, staging, or zoos.

This week’s country is South Korea, one of my absolute favourite countries. We’re going to do things slightly differently this week; I’m expanding it to fifteen photos, because Korea was just so photogenic.

#15 – Roof detail

Traditional Korean architecture is just so beautiful.

#14 – Just hanging out on Bukhansan

Brent hanging next to a fairly sheer drop, nearly at the top of Bukhansan, a mountain on the outskirts of Seoul

#13 – Flower Elephant

Just off the coast at Busan, we sat inside this small shelter and drank soju before quitting Korea for good.

#11 – The Mask
—————————————————————————————–

Brent in a traditional spirit mask. I wore this to a big party in one of Seoul’s parks for Halloween.

#10 – Waterfall

One of the many picturesque waterfalls on Jeju Island, off the South West coast.

#8 – Totems

I love these guys – they’re so expressive, and completely gormless looking.

#7 – Gyeongbokgung Gate

The entrance to the Joseon palace of Gyeongbokgung.

#6.1 & #6.2 – The Changing of the Korean Guard

Yes, I’m cheating, but I couldn’t decide between them. This was at the elaborate changing of the guard at Gyeongbokgung palace, and it was wonderful.

#5 – Games in the Park
—————————————————————————————–

IMG_0396

I’ve never seen so many people congregating in public to play board games. This wasn’t an isolated incident either; old men (mostly) meet up in lots of parks across the city, street corners and pavements to play. There are boards and pieces scattered around, apparently for anyone to use. Unfortunately, they only play Go and Chinese Chess, neither of which I can play well at all, so I couldn’t join in.

#4 – Korean Gargoyles
—————————————————————————————–

IMG_0254

I love these guys. These ones were on the Hanok houses in Seoul, but you can spot them all over.

#3 – In the palace grounds
—————————————————————————————–

IMG_0202

Korean traditional architecture is just so beautiful.

#2 – Who watches the watchmen?

These are North Korean soldiers, watching us across the Demilitarized Zone dividing the two countries.

#1 – GyeongBokGung
