top10: The Philippines

The ten best photos I took in the Philippines. Chosen because I think they show something particularly interesting, characteristic of the country, encapsulating a vivid memory I hold of the place, or just for being pretty.

These are mostly taken on my phone, because I didn’t buy my new camera until I hit Hong Kong (that’ll be next week). Anyway, here they are. Number ten…

#9 and #10 – Cock Fighting

IMAG0328

IMAG0326These were taken on the island of Malapasqua, where we went along to the main entertainment for the village, the weekly cock-fight. It’s a brutal and frenetic sport, accompanied with lots of betting. Definitely a vivid memory, but I’ll spare you the more bloody photos.

#8 – A Petrol Station

That’s our bus driver on the island of Coron, buying a jerry can of fuel.

#7 – Palms

#6 – Banka Ride
—————————————————————————————–

IMAG0338

Travelling between islands, Philippine style, on an outrigger banka boat.

#5 – House under the palms

#4 – Jeepneys
—————————————————————————————–

IMAG0314

The jeepneys of Manila. Something between a bus and a taxi, these flamboyant vehicles are customised by their owners, and are one of the most characteristic sights of Philippine streets.

#3 – Arrival on Apo Island
—————————————————————————————–

IMAG0342

The only access to the tiny Apo Island is by banka, but it was well worth the trip.

#2 – Apo

IMAG0345

The view from my window on Apo Island, one of the best diving spots in the Philippines.

#1 – Beach at Sunset
—————————————————————————————–

IMAG0318

Sunset at Alona Beach, on the Island of Panglao. My first stop in the Philippines, and one of the prettiest. Sonal and I sat on the beach drinking fresh mango cocktails and watching the sun go down on the Visayan Sea.

#BONUS PHOTO – Thresher Shark
—————————————————————————————–

I took this from Sonal’s facebook page, but it’s too cool not to include. A big thresher shark cruising past us at dawn, just off Malapasqua.
