top10: China

It’s Saturday, so that must mean another top10.

I’m sure you’re getting the hang of the idea now, but here are the rules again:

  • Ten photos per country.
  • All mine.
  • No fakery, staging, or zoos.
  • Photos are chosen because I think they show something particularly interesting, characteristic of the country, encapsulating a vivid memory I hold of that place, or just for being pretty.

To get to any of the other top10 posts, just click the top10 link to the right, and it’ll bring them all up.

This time it’s the turn of the middle kingdom: China.

IMG_5894 Ah, Baiju. It looks so classy in the ceramic pot, and tastes so awful. It is good fun breaking the top off the bottle to get at it though (no resealable bottles here- might as well finish it off then!)

Communism, what communism? Starbucks has penetrated beyond the Great Wall pretty effectively.

These were alive and wriggling, and surprisingly tasty when deep fried. Crispy!

A lion (I think) guarding the entrance to one of the main halls in the Forbidden City, and hoards of tourists.

This has got to be one of the toughest jobs ever. The porters carry water, food, building materials and rubbish up and down the mountainside of Huashan. And they all seem to be in their mid-sixties too.

The Great Wall of China. Of course this got the top spot; it’s just so photogenic. This is the section at Jinshanling

#BONUS PHOTO

Yeah, I’m cheating. Hey, it’s my blog. Here’s a bonus photo of the Shanghai waterfront – Pudong on the left, and the Bund on the right. It’s not a fantastic panorama, but I like the contrast of the old and the new on each bank, and the brightly lit tourist boats against the silhouettes of the industrial barges in the centre.
